How the rubric reads here

Vibe Ready

4/5

Would a non-technical founder reach for it with confidence?

Drops into a tech stack from frontend or backend—stream events, changes, whatever you need. Not a 5 because event shape and what to expose in a customer dashboard still need a design pass before the SDK work pays off.

Time to Wow

3/5

How fast from signup to something you can show someone?

A 3—not instant like dropping a GA tag. First win comes after you wire a stream, decide what JSON matters, and connect a chart. The wow is live or near-live data surfacing in the product, not a dashboard in the first hour.

Ease of Use

4/5

Can a PM own it day-to-day without an engineer on call?

Turnkey: collection and display move into the team's hands. Simple SDK for charts and graphics; filter JSON in the streams down to what each view needs. Does not distract from the roadmap once wired.

Depth of Value

4/5

Does it grow with you—or hit a hard ceiling in six months?

High when customers live inside embedded dashboards—Covid testing flow (user to lab and back) for US, Canadian, and Mexican Olympic teams proved it. Sticky when live data and on-the-fly customization are part of the product promise.

Founders note: Another hidden gem. I found this solution when I was trolling through the TechStars perks database. Keen is a TechStars company from before I went through the programs. I think of this as a combination of JSON database and logging application, with an amazing chart UI attached.

What Keen is

Keen is an amazing tool for building live charts and graphics using JSON data.

This solution allows me to stream data from a frontend app or a backend API—events, changes, etc. Keen collects them as streams, and then supplies a simple SDK that lets a user show charts and graphics of the data. Since the data is JSON in the streams, the SDK lets the user filter the data down.

Why the usual analytics assumptions are wrong

Analytics is often assumed to be three things: (1) back office, (2) expensive to collect and use, and (3) limited front-of-house utility. This is very wrong. Keen allowed a user to build workflows that surface data as it happens.

Google Analytics is not the only source of analytics. Keen moves the collection and display into the hands of the team. The price point is very affordable, and the access to streams of data that roll into charts provides a solution that would normally be ignored or assumed to not provide value.

Customer-specific dashboards

This was great for building customer-specific dashboards. The charting UI was powerful—that we integrated the solution into our Covid testing dashboard for monitoring the flow of test data from user to lab and the data coming back. It was very helpful when we did the Covid testing for the US, Canadian, and Mexico Olympic teams.

What you’d regret ignoring

Live data, or near-live data. Their customers will notice the utility and the ability to customize on the fly.

When to reach for it

Not sure I would explain Keen to a co-founder in one minute—but this solution is turnkey. It drops into a tech stack, provides value, and does not distract from the roadmap.

Investors will not care. This is too niche in a stack to provide any value for a conversation with an investor. That is fine. This is an operator call.

At a glance

  • What it is: Event streaming plus embedded charts—JSON in, live graphics out, from frontend or backend.
  • Best for: Customer-specific dashboards, operational flows where the team or end user needs to see data as it happens.
  • Not a fit: Site-only traffic analytics (Google Analytics / PostHog lane) or anything you need on an investor diligence slide.

What to do next

Set a free demo account. Link a part of the application that would help their team or their customers understand the nature of their account.

AI prompts for vibe coding

Prompt 1
I want to stream JSON events from my Node.js API to Keen.io. Show the Streams API POST shape, how to create a project and write key, and a minimal example event for a status change with nested properties.
Prompt 2
Using Keen's SDK, embed a live chart in my React app that reads from an event stream and lets me filter JSON properties down to one customer account. List env vars and what must stay server-side.
Prompt 3
I need a customer-facing dashboard slice—not back-office GA. Compare wiring Keen streams + charts vs rolling my own event pipeline. When is Keen the right turnkey choice?
